Why You Should Be a Camp Counselor This Summer

By Ian Acosta on April 13, 2017

Summer is fast approaching. For those of us who are sick of winter and cooler temperatures, the warmer temperatures are a welcome feel. With the warmer weather comes job hunting as well. One job that many do not tend to consider unless they have done it in the past is working with day camps, or specifically, working as a camp counselor.

Camp counselors have many duties and responsibilities which promote teamwork, leadership, and overall fun. The job not only looks great as a resume builder but also is a great experience to work with younger people and help others. If you see yourself in a career where helping and teaching others is a major aspect, camp counseling is a great role.

Here are a few reasons why a summer camp job might make the most sense for you this summer.

The relationships

For some of you who went to day camp as campers long long ago, you might have met some of your closest friends during camp who you still keep in touch with to this day. With counselors, it is no different. The bonds you could form with other counselors and even other campers can make the experience totally worth it.

Take a chance on a great opportunity and, hopefully, make some new friends in the process.

The lessons

There are an extraordinary number of lessons to learn from both fellow counselors and campers. As their counselor, they trust you and will share their experiences and memories with you. Not only will you gain more knowledge from them, you may pick up an important life lesson or two from them as well.

As their counselor, you are just that: a counselor. By that I mean that you are there to provide them with advice. Not just advice on activities you all may have planned for the day, but any questions they have about life in general. This is your chance to pass on what you have come to learn and appreciate about life and hope that they can experience the same and grow from it.

It is truly a deep experience and a privilege, in my opinion, to be able to share that with younger people.

The outdoors

What better way to experience summer than to be outdoors literally every day? Not only that, but you get paid to do fun activities outside with your friends and campers. Does not sound too shabby.

Between playing sports, hiking, camping, and crafting, there are a multitude of fun games and activities to do while outside to get the most out of the beautiful weather. Not only that, but it is a great way to explore nature. Every campsite has its own unique aspect of nature that makes it a must-see spot. This can be your chance to go out and find it.

The traditions

The camp traditions are memorable. If this summer will potentially be your first time learning the traditions, you have the opportunity to learn from other counselors and camp directors as to why they are so valuable and essential to the camp’s tradition. Once you appreciate and learn the background of the traditions, you will be able to effectively and positively pass them onto your campers so that they can learn more about the camp’s history and the origin of the traditions.

Camp traditions are a way to form a bond between campers and counselors. If history is an aspect you very much appreciate, take the time to apply to be a counselor and learn another camp’s traditions.

The stories

The stories that will come from camp will no doubt be some of the best memories you or your campers will ever make. Not only that but if you worked as a counselor at the camp in summers past, you can tell new campers each summer about your past experiences and stories which will inspire them to create their own.

Everyone loves a good story and I am sure many of you love sharing your own hilarious or entertaining stories. Why not create some as a camp counselor this summer?

The getaway

Going to camp for the summer is a chance to get away from it all. What that means is no technology, no cell phones, no social media, and limited use of electronics. It gives you an escape from the outside world and a chance to focus on nature, your campers, and yourself.

If you are looking for an experience that can offer you a reprieve from your usual day to day routine and disconnect you from everyday life, counseling may be just the thing for you. Everyone needs their own version of rest and relaxation. This version may be just the type for you.
